Agar Gelagar CT 1.2 Specification (B&V)

Gelagar CT 1.2 is a high-performance agar with enhanced gel strength, manufactured by the Italian company B&V. To achieve maximum gel strength, extended boiling time is required during preparation. In accordance with EU Directive No. 231/2012 dated 09.03.2012, agar is assigned the number E406 in the list of permitted food additives.

  • Odor and taste: odorless and tasteless
  • Moisture: < 15.0%
  • Ash: < 5.0%
  • pH (10% suspension): 5.0–7.5
  • Mesh: < 10% retained on 80 mesh
  • Starch, gelatin, and proteins: not detected

Gel strength

Gel strength: >1,200 g/cm² at 20 °C (boil 5–10 minutes, minimum 1.5% solution, measured with Mecmesin instrument).

  • Gelling temperature: 38 °C ± 5 °C
  • Melting temperature: 90 °C ± 5 °C

Heavy metals

  • Pb < 5 mg/kg
  • Hg < 1 mg/kg
  • As < 3 mg/kg
  • Cd < 1 mg/kg

Microbiological parameters

  • Total plate count: < 5,000 CFU/g
  • Yeast and mold: < 300 CFU/g
  • Salmonella: absent in 5 g
  • E. coli: absent in 5 g
