DSTU 4623-2006 “White sugar” is the Ukrainian national standard for white (refined) sugar produced from sugar beet. This standard establishes the classification, quality requirements, testing methods, and rules for packaging, labeling, transportation, and storage of white sugar.
Scope and classification
The standard covers white crystalline sugar in three categories based on purity:
- Category 1 (Extra) — the highest purity grade with the lowest color, ash, and moisture values
- Category 2 — standard retail-quality white sugar
- Category 3 — white sugar intended for industrial processing
Key quality parameters
- Sucrose content (dry basis): minimum 99.7% (Extra) to 99.5% (Category 3)
- Moisture: not more than 0.10% (Extra) to 0.15% (Category 3)
- Reducing sugars: maximum 0.03% (Extra) to 0.065% (Category 3)
- Ash: maximum 0.02% (Extra) to 0.05% (Category 3)
- Color: specified in ICUMSA units — lower values for higher categories
- Organoleptic: white color, clean sweet taste without foreign flavors, no odor, clear solution without sediment
Safety requirements
The standard sets limits for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), pesticide residues, and microbiological indicators in compliance with Ukrainian sanitary regulations.
